It’s time for a trip to Hogsmeade… or you know, you’re living room because I’ve officially created the ultimate Butterbeer recipe that you can make at home.
So here’s the deal. Butterbeer is probably the most famous drink in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. And according to the Harry Potter fandom wiki (yes, there’s such a thing, and yes I reference it far too often), Butterbeer is made out of butterscotch, sugar and water. It can also be served hot or cold. Today, I have the cold or “frozen” version of Butterbeer but I’m working on creating a hot version for this winter too. Stay tuned.
It is also considered slightly alcoholic. So very much do feel free to add a shot or two to your creation. I think rum would probably suit it best, but I’m open to suggestions.

Anyways, according to the definition of Butterbeer in it’s original form, I’m pretty sure you’d need to add a whole lot of magic to it to get it tasting delicious. Because in the books, it’s the greatest drink around. But if the ingredients are only butterscotch, sugar and water… well, I might have needed to give it a miss.
Out of the book world, I have tried Butterbeer at both Universal Studios Orlando (it’s PHENOMENAL there – a bit sickeningly sweet, in a good way) and at the Warner Brothers Studio London where the Harry Potter series was filmed. In London… the Butterbeer isn’t quite so good and I’m fairly sure it’s because they can’t get away with adding everything that it’s it in the states.
Needless to say, I’m starting to become a Butterbeer connoisseur.
So, I’ve brewed up my very own potion batch for you. Now, my version is mostly dairy-free, which I find allows me to definitely skip feeling sick after… but you can certainly substitute any of these ingredients as you choose.
And here’s the real win, it only requires FOUR ingredients. Perfect!
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Virgil’s Vanilla Cream Soda
- Oatly Salted Caramel Ice Cream
- Caramel Sauce
- Whipped Cream
Steps for Four Ingredient Butterbeer
Step one: Pour and freeze the cream soda into reusable ice cube trays. Annoyingly, if you want to make cold Butterbeer this recipe requires patience of waiting a day or a few hours to make it.
Step two: Take several of your frozen cream soda cubes and add them to a blender.
Step three: Add a few scoops of salted caramel ice cream (I think vanilla would also work here, but just add in some extra caramel sauce). I measure this as equal parts to the cubes. Like two-ish scoops.
Step four: Add a good squeeze of caramel sauce – or two rather heaping spoonfuls if you don’t have a squeeze bottle.
Step five: Top up your concoction with Vanilla Cream Soda. I have a very small personal use blender which allows making one drink at a time. But I’d say maybe 3/4th of a 12fl oz bottle will do the trick per serving.
Step six: BLEND
Serve in a chilled glass (if you are fancy) adding whipped cream and caramel sauce on top for “decor”.

Cheers!
Unfortunately, I smashed one of our beer glasses right before making these so I had to use wine glasses instead. Which I don’t think look too terrible but now I need to find some new pretty beer glasses for the house…
But that’s it. Quite simply, the easiest Butterbeer recipe. Best enjoyed paired alongside any of the Harry Potter films or perhaps rereading the books for the millionth time.
Enjoy!
