Growing up I was always ashamed that I wore glasses. Most of my friends didn’t wear them. I had these bulky round wire frames. It wasn’t chic. It wasn’t cool. In fact, it was kind of embarrassing. I remember feeling self conscious about it. Much like I also remember being self conscious about having super bushy Hermione style eyebrows. Oh how times would change in 10 years.
When I was three years old, my family discovered that I genuinely couldn’t see. The optometrist decided to have me wear an eye patch over my right eye – my good eye. It was in the hopes that it would strengthen my left eye. It didn’t. I can only recall tiny bits and pieces of that time. There was a lot of crying. It wasn’t good.
Fast forward to starting school with a big smile, and well big wire frames that covered my face. I think there’s actually plenty of character building within it and have faced some adversity. I was definitely teased and called ‘four eyes’ a time or two. At the time? I hated it. I hated glasses. Of course I did. I was a kid who desperately wanted to fit in, to be cool. Didn’t we all want that? Despite it making me feel beyond self conscious. I really needed my glasses. I have little to no vision in my left eye. Everything is a blur.
Slowly, I got over my hate of my glasses. They’d become a part of me. My glasses helped me read endless novels, they allowed me to go on adventures with Harry Potter, learn to write passionately and with conviction, helped me pass my driver’s test, see stunning movies and be a part of the world. They shaped me into who I am today.
I started to select my frames fitting to my personal style. I ditched the wire frames. As I got older, so did my peers, and we all stopped being negative about petty things like glasses. As you can guess, slowly over the years, friends, colleagues and acquaintances have needed to get them. And in high school, kids were actually buying fake glasses.
Now it’s totally cool to have a pair of specs. It’s also cool to have big bold brows, finally.
When I’m scheduling my eye appointments, I look forward to introducing a new style into my life. Over the past few years, I’ve gone for bold big frames. I think after years of the wire frames growing up, I’ll be staying away from those for a little while still.
My favourite style has to be the big oversized glasses. I love the look and incorporating glasses into your life. It’s an extension of you and of your style. Before I went away to uni, I’d finally picked out amazing glasses, and it seems like each year they get better and better.
In the past, I always went into a store to buy my new frames. I had absolutely no clue that you could do it all online, like with Vision Direct. The times really have changed.
Instead of spending hours trying them on to decide, Vision Direct make it all super easy with a few clicks. All you need is your prescription and the ordering is made easy. I picked these sassy babes to add to my collection in the tortoiseshell colour. I have a pair of black frames already and wanted to mix it up with these. I’m really enjoying how they still fall into that big glasses category. The frames themselves are actually quite thin.
Most of us live consistently on our laptops, whether its while you’re at work or while you’re at home. Society today indicates for the most part that it’s both! I look at a computer screen all day long, my phone and my iPad and then I come home and write my blog posts or complete freelance work. My eyes are pretty tired by the end of the week and I always keep my glasses on hand to help keep my eyes cool and keep me going, creating, writing and passionately dreaming.
It’s about time we start loving ourselves and our glasses, you know?
Kelly xoxo
PS. This is a sponsored post in collaboration with Vision Direct, who sent me these babes of frames that I picked out. All opinions and photos are my own, obviously.
