You know I love a good day at the Buddha Bar.
So when they invited me along to try out their Sushi and Sake Masterclass, they really had to twist my arm about it.
First things first, this is serious business. Sushi making is very involved. Sake is not for the faint of heart. And well, a little sneak preview? Their cocktails are bold.
Let’s get started. For the masterclasses, the Buddha Bar takes you to a sneaky private room that’s set up for the class. Glasses and ingredients at the ready…
Now usually I reserve my wine glasses for well, wine. But apparently sake is to be enjoyed in all various states of presentation. Who knew?
First, we all sipped on the sake without mixing with our food palates. I’d actually never tried sake until this point in time. And well, it’s pretty strong tasting. Not for the weak. Very reminiscent of tequila actually…
However! Paired with sushi, the taste of sake loosen’s its grip on you.
Each sake mixes and mingles with the food in a unique way. Much like how we have specific wines that work with certain foods, sake works the same way. Fun fact, it’s also made from rice.
After learning about sake (and eating the incredible sushi we paired with it) we went on to learn how to make a sushi roll.
It’s actually much simpler than you think, although I don’t think any of ours in the class rivaled the chefs.
Take a handful of rice, roll it into a ball and then smash it and spread it out onto the seaweed wrap.
Flip the wrap so the rice is face down and then add the goods. Salmon and avocado. The fish at Buddha Bar could not be any fresher. It’s phenomenal.
And roll it into perfection… Violà!
Not too shabby for a first try, am I right?
And very cleverly, our sushi was boxed up to go for later. (Sidenote, J was very happy about this.)
Moving on from foods, we naturally finished out night up at the bar…
Sampling and learning how to make aperitifs and digestive drinks..
Sake and sushi masterclasses at the Buddha-Bar run at £90 per person for an hour of sushi making and sake tasting. It’s definitely something I’d recommend if you’re looking for a new experience that takes sushi eating to the next level.
Cocktail masterclasses are also available at the Buddha-Bar, and prices vary depending on the group size. I was chatting with the team and these are really popular for work team building nights.
Nothing builds a team like a little bit of alcohol after all. And sushi.
