Is this the real life Velaris? Visit the city of starlight also known as Zermatt
Do you ever wish you could live in a fairytale? I think this ALL THE TIME.
And I actually do think there’s so much in the real world that feels like something come to life from the pages of our favourite novels. As a long time fan of Sarah J Maas and the world of A Court of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR) – visiting Zermatt in Switzerland is exactly as I picture the fictional city of The Night Court, Velaris.
Zermatt, Switzerland has been a town that has very much been on my “bucket list” to visit for quite some time. As an absolute lover of winter, snow and cold weather, I knew we needed to visit Zermatt. And gazing upon sprawling snow covered rooftops and mountains… I know this is a place I’ll return to time and time again.
Zermatt is certainly a place that looks like something imagined in a fantasy novel but I assure you, is 100% real.

Also, I know I said I’d visit again… and we did! A few years later and a brand new hair colour… we found ourselves back in the city of dreamers.

A Court of Thorns and Roses inspiration…
For those who have read the “A Court of Thorns and Roses” series by Sarah J. Maas, Zermatt could easily be the inspiration behind the fictional city of Velaris. In fact, the canton (a canton, upon a quick Google search is essentially a state in Switzerland) is known as Valais. Valais or Velaris? It feels suspiciously close to inspiration for the city of starlight, don’t you think?

No matter where the fictional city of dreams was inspired by, it’s easy to feel inspired visiting this town. There truly is something magical about the sun setting over the Matterhorn. The faded magentas and lilacs simmering as the evening fades into darkness and the homes of the city begin to sparkle, coming to life for the evening.
Zermatt is a stunning place to visit. And without a doubt should be a place that everyone should see at least once in their lifetime.
