ad | Did you know that on the night of Samhain, aka Halloween, when the veil is thin…spirits and the supernatural are said to be able to cross into our physical world? Are YOU ready to celebrate Samhain in Ireland?@tourismireland 🎃👻🕯️

Irish spirits, ghouls, hauntings & stories to know? ⬇️
🐈‍⬛The Púca: A shape shifting spirit that transforms into various animals, a black horse, goats, cats, donkeys, bulls, dogs, foxes, wolves, and hares, though always with jet-black fur and glowing eyes! Known as a bit of a trickster!
🧚 The Aos Sí (Fairies of the Mound): Fairies that come out of ancient fairy forts for moonlight gatherings. Known for being extremely protective, they can retaliate against anyone who disturbs sacred or rural land
👻 The Banshee: A spirit who if you hear their wailing…perhaps means an approaching death! 😅
🐺In Galway, watch for the great Black Dog when crossing the Wolfe Tone bridge at midnight, if you don’t make it fast enough, he’ll take you!
🏰 Leap Castle is one of the most haunted castles in the world, right in County Offaly! A very spooky past and one to add to haunted bucket list travels!
🎭The tradition of dressing up and wearing masks comes from tricking the spirits into believing you’re one of them! Wearing a mask hides your true identity so you’ll be left unharmed on Samhain

I love how Irish storytelling is so woven into everyday life and truly some of my favourite stories surround the spirits and stories of Samhain!

One last fun fact for you! The tradition of communal bonfires on Samhain originated as a way to ward off the dark and evil spirits. It’s a tradition that I still love today, the glowing embers feel like the perfect way to bring in the autumn 🍂🎃🔥

📍Ireland, the Home of Halloween 🎃👻🕯️

ad | Did you know that Ireland is actually THE birthplace of Halloween? @tourismireland 🎃🍂🏰🍁

Halloween as we know it today originated from the ancient Celtic, Samhain. And did you know that Samhain actually means, “summer’s end”? The celebration of Samhain marks the beginning of the dark half of the year as we welcome winter.

And you’ll certainly be sure to find celebrations all over Ireland throughout the month of October! I’ve been lucky enough to spend the last FOUR Halloween’s across the isle of Ireland and have had the absolute best time exploring: from @pucafestivalireland in Trim, @macnas in Galway, @derryhalloween: Europe’s Largest Halloween Celebration!, and Halloween last year was spent exploring County Limerick & County Kerry.

So, when are YOU going to spend Halloween in Ireland?! 😍

Dunrobin Castle feels like finding a magical French castle in the highlands of Scotland 🏰✨🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

It totally reminds me of the Beauty and the Beast castle or a real life Beauxbatons Academy!

Things to know before your visit ⤵️
🚙 The drive from Inverness to Dunrobin Castle is just over an hour
🎟 Tickets are £16 per person
🍃 Inspiration for the garden from the Palace of Versailles in Paris, you can totally see it.
🏰 It’s only open from April to October

The perfect dark academia bookshop & café 😍

I could have sat here for HOURS but I only had a short amount of time in the city. I popped in just a little bit before closing for a delicious oat milk hot chocolate, time to buy a new book and enjoy the atmosphere.

Also in case you didn’t know, Manchester is home to some of the most beautiful dark academia libraries in the world, my faves: John Ryland’s Library, Chetham’s Library & Portico Library. And there are actually about 80 public libraries in Manchester!

Save this post for your next visit to the city ❤️

A MAGICAL FOREST 🌲✨🍂

Did you know this row of trees is actually the super famous Dark Hedges of Northern Ireland? You might recognise them as they featured as the “King’s Road” in Game of Thrones.

I’d highly recommend visiting in the autumn, the colours are SO beautiful… but I think also a trip in the spring could be perfect! Tips for visiting? You are not allowed to drive on the road! If you are visiting there is a car park at one end of the road and it’s a super easy walk down 🌲🌲🌲
