Four years of living in London and I hated our bedroom.
It was a part furnished rented flat – which meant that the bed and mattress came with the flat and we just had to deal with it.
I hated it.
The bedroom never felt like it was our own. It was overcrowded with our stuff (spillover from our living room) and wasn’t particularly comfortable. We made it work because we had to. But now that we’ve moved out of London, we decided on making big changes to our lifestyle.
I want to add calm, clarity and comfort to our everyday lives – and especially to the setup of our bedroom.
When you move house (unless it’s a part-furnished deal like we had before) you get a mostly clean slate to work with. But most people aren’t in the process of moving. It’s a work with what you have situation, so I wanted to come up with easy switches that work for people who are either moving and starting fresh or if you’re looking to upgrade your existing bedroom.
So in my KPW version of improving your space to a Hygge type bedroom, here are the…
7 easy switches you can make to upgrade your bedroom right now
A new set of pajamas
How many of us grab our old tee’s and sweats out of our drawer to bum around in? ME! I’m 1000% guilty of this all the time. I love that worn in old comfort feeling. But to be honest, I needed an upgrade in the PJ department.
A fresh matching set was long overdue. It makes me feel a little more like a Malibu housewife who has my shit together rather than a broke university student living on noodles. Neither of which I actually am, but let’s always opt for a visual collective that replicates the wardrobes of the cast of Big Little Lies.
Lighting candles
Unbeknownst to me, I seem to have become the type of person who wants to live in a cosy Hygge world without ever having read the actual book that teaches you how to do it. I assume there are candles galore though. Because there are in my house.
Candles add so much dimension to a room and I’ve absolutely become the type of person that has candles burning in multiple rooms all day long (just you know, keep your eye on them). A few on my bedside table create an excellent accent piece – and they smell great. Right now I’m loving the collection of pumpkin candles at Homesense.
Investing in a great mattress
We spend one third of our lives sleeping. Not treating yourself to a comfortable mattress seems like it would be a great shame, right? Over the past few years of my life I didn’t realize what an impact getting a good night’s sleep has had. We’ve slept on some pretty damn uncomfortable ones and I’ve realized in my late 20s (sigh) that it’s important to be able to wake up in the morning feeling refreshed, relaxed and comfortable.
So that being said, we have a shiny new mattress in our brand new flat and I’m downright giddy about it. Does this make me an adult for real now? Anyways, Leesa, the mattress company, kindly sent me this UK King mattress for our bedroom. It comes in a box and couldn’t have been an easier process getting it into the flat, opened and onto the bed.
Now let’s get technical. The Leesa mattress is comprised of 3 foam layers, that adjust to your body to offer optimum support and comfort. I was a little skeptical about getting a strictly foam mattress – I’ve never had one before and I thought we’d melt into the bed and never be able to get back out. But Leesa have designed an innovative mattress that eliminates those drawbacks of traditional memory foam mattresses like overheating at night and leaving long-lasting dips that you’re stuck in forever.
I’ve had my Leesa mattress for a month now and I can’t stress enough how happy I am with it. I’m sleeping better than I have in years – I’m feeling more rested and as silly as it sounds – I look forward to enjoying my morning coffee in bed. (I also have a cheeky little code for you to get £100 off a mattress with them too – use KELLYPRINCEWRITES at checkout)
An incredibly cosy blanket
It would be silly to invest in a beautiful mattress and not decorate it to the nines. And that goes for comfort as well. I love throwing a cosy, soft blanket at the end of my bed. It’s perfect for when I’m cold in the night as well as becoming a staple piece of my bed decor.
Supportive, comfortable pillows
On that note, I know that you may want to spring for the sale section pillows but I’m advising against it. You really should invest in comfortable, supportive pillows. The ones that are fluffy, large and actually provide comfort and lift. Trust me, your head deserves it.
A green plant or two
Plants! I could go on and on about the benefits of adding plants to your home. Instead I’ll tell you that simply it looks pretty and adds dimension to your bedroom. A common mistake is that everyone always thinks about adding plants to their living rooms, but I think it’s important that plants spill over into your bedroom too. We added an Areca palm to our space which has air-purifying qualities and acts as an effective humidifier (wahoo)! OK, so I told you a benefit or two…!
Upgrade your book collection
Something that I discovered I’d missed dearly in my life was reading. I know I write a blog and read blogs but I’m talking about sinking your teeth into a good novel. This summer I’ve gotten back into the swing of things with finding books to love. I think having a stack of novels in your bedroom is the perfect move. I’ve been reading a little before I go to sleep – giving myself a slight digital detox before hitting the hay.
And most importantly, make sure to enjoy it!
It’s all about adding and upgrading to your space in a way that makes sense for you. And I do think that these are achievable ways to make your bedroom feel much better, brighter and more relaxing to live in. That’s the most important thing, after all, feeling great in your space. Whether that’s cute new pj’s, candles galore or getting comfy on a brand new mattress.
And don’t forget if you’re looking to upgrade your mattress (and treat yourself) I’ve got that cheeky £100 off code using ‘KELLYPRINCEWRITES’ you can use at checkout for one of Leesa’s mattresses. Oh! And definitely tell me your favourite ways to upgrade your bedroom space in the comments below too!

PS. This post is sponsored in collaboration with Leesa mattresses and contains affiliate links, but all thoughts, photos and opinions are my own as always. I genuinely have enjoyed sleeping on this mattress and can’t recommend it enough as an easy bedroom upgrade.
I thought I’d also add in some fun company facts that I LOVE here too. Because it’s 2018, we’re shopping more ethically and thinking about charitable contributions that companies make. It’s important – and it matters. And Leesa operate exclusively online and offer a 100-night risk-free trial period. So if it isn’t working out for you at any point in the first 100 nights of receiving the mattress, all you have to do is get in touch with them and they arrange for the mattress to be collected and donated through a charitable organisation. And it’s not just those mattresses because they also donate one mattress to charitable causes, for every ten sold. Isn’t it great when shopping feels good?
