Did you know that you can actually watch Pride and Prejudice AT Mr Darcy’s house?!
That’s right! This is a total literary bucket list experience that you HAVE to do once in your lifetime!
In case you didn’t know, Mr Darcy’s house ‘Pemberley‘ in the 2005 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice starring Kiera Knightly and Matthew McFadden is actually the REAL LIFE Chatsworth House located in the Peak District in England!
Twice a year, Chatsworth House holds outdoor cinema nights showcasing Pride and Prejudice (2005). There are usually two nights during the summer (this year it was in June!) and once again during the autumn.
And this year is a great year to book tickets as we are celebrating 20 years since the release of this iconic adaption of Jane Austen’s famed novel! How fast time flies!
But what do you need to know before you go?

What should I bring with me?
Bring picnic blankets, baskets, drinks and plenty of snacks. We brought a few blankets, pillows and a picnic basket filled with snacks and a chilled bottle of wine.
Also, I’d highly recommend going even more all out, the women in front of us had an epic cheese board set up!
I’d also really recommend bringing chairs to sit in to make sure to you can see everything. We had our picnic blankets on the ground, and luckily our view was OK, but it would have been even better sitting a bit higher up as so many people brought them.
And because this will go ahead no matter the weather, I’d recommend keeping umbrellas, rain jackets and extra blankets in your car just in case.
This is England after all!

Can you get food and drinks at Chatsworth House during the film?
Yes you can!
They have a bar that you can purchase drinks and snacks from if you don’t feel like bringing your own. Joe grabbed a beer and I saw they had popcorn available too – though we brought our own!
What time should I arrive? What’s the atmosphere like?
Arriving mid-evening, the air was full of the scent of grass, popcorn, and blooming roses. OK and maybe a bit of pollen – take your allergy tablets so you don’t have watery eyes like me!
I would recommend getting there right as the gates open! The film starts at 7pm and the gates open at 6pm.
We arrived a bit later so had to do some navigating to find the perfect spot. If you arrive early – you’ll get a spot that you want without a problem.
And the atmosphere is such good fun! There are groups of girlfriends gathered together, couples, and families all spread out to enjoy the show. It’s definitely a crowd for all ages, but I would probably recommend if children come that they are a bit older so they can properly enjoy it!
As the film started, the hush that fell over the crowd was lovingly expectant. And it’s such fun when the crowd reacts to moments all at the same time. The hand flex! Excellent boiled potatoes! The proposal in the rain! Mr Darcy walking over the misty landscape!
It was all such a dream!

Where to stay the night? The Cavendish
If you’re like me, you’re travelling from out of the area just for this so you’ll need a comfy, cosy place to rest your head for the evening.
We stayed at The Cavendish, which is a super short 7 minute drive from Chatsworth House. You can actually also walk from there up to the house too – I think we’ll save that one for next time though!
The Cavendish is absolutely a country-house daydream. Inside, pretty coral-pink armchairs beckon beside stacks of art-inspired paperbacks. It’s a beautiful hotel and truthfully, we regretted that we didn’t have enough time there to enjoy as we were going up to Chatsworth House to watch the film.
If you’re just staying for one night, make sure to book in for an early dinner in their stunning restaurant before heading off to watch our favourite couple on screen!
But perhaps my favourite hotel moment? A leisurely breakfast before heading back up to Chatsworth to explore the grounds.
But here are a few more hotel options to explore in the area to suit any budget
So – would you watch Pride and Prejudice at Mr Darcy’s house??
Kelly xoxo
