Any time I ever see anything Harry Potter related that I can do in real life… you know I’m signing up IMMEDIATELY for it! And overnight stays? It’s a yes from me! We’ve stayed in super cool magical locations like a real-life Hagrid’s Hut and The Wizard Chambers at The Georgian House Hotel in London.
So when I spotted that there is a townhouse in York, England that resembles a real life 12 Grimmauld Place? We couldn’t book a night fast enough.
Nestled amongst a gorgeous row of homes outside the enchanting city of York, England, lies this hidden gem that promises a truly magical stay. With its whimsical name 101 House at the End is truly as close as you can get to a real life stay at Number 12 Grimmauld Place from the Harry Potter series.
Chapter 1: The start of a magical adventure
Step through the threshold and it feels like crossing into a realm where time stands still. Magic feels like it is absolutely woven into the very fabric of these surroundings. The entrance truly looks just like Sirius Black’s childhood home from the films. The entryway is so similar in fact, that it’s like stepping straight into the film set.
I love that the decor is actually intended to look like an ancient magical home. Which means the wallpaper has tears and the home looks incredibly well-worn. Of course, the effect pays off. It’s these purposeful little details that make the stay that much more charming.
Chapter 2: Enchanted Interiors
Once inside, the interiors of 101 House at the End continue to transport guests into our favourite fantasy realm.
Each room is meticulously designed to evoke a sense of comfort and cosy with whimsical décor that seamlessly blends with the historical elements of the building. From the handcrafted tapestries to the antique furniture seems to whisper tales of centuries past, every detail contributes to the magical ambiance. You’ll find potions bottles, scrolls and well worn novels adorn the shelves too.
If I’m honest it feels VERY similar to my very own magical home – so we happily settled in!
Chapter 3: Culinary Conjurations
No magical stay is complete without indulging in culinary delights and 101 House at the End ensures that guests have the perfect space to create their very own feast. I would have loved to recreate the Christmas scene from the Order of the Phoenix… but we settled for a wine and cheese night, pasta bake and brunch in the kitchen and living room space.
I also love that there are TVs in all of the rooms as well ensuring that you can watch your favourite magical films while you’re staying! We kept the Harry Potter films on in the background of our whole stay which was so much fun.
Chapter 4: Regal Bedrooms + a Ministry of Magic Bathroom
Head up the narrow staircase – seriously, be careful it’s steep – and you’ll find two bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs. Don’t forget to look up to spot floating candles above!
The main bedroom gives very House of Black Slytherin vibes. Rich deep green and black interiors plus lots of velvet – it really does feel like you’re staying at Number 12 Grimmauld Place. Also the bed is SUPER comfy!
The second bedroom is more of a Gryffindor Dormitory aesthetic including surprisingly spacious bunk beds, red curtains and even a portrait of a woman in the door leading in… much like that of the Gryffindor Common Room which I think is so cool!
OK you know I’m obsessed with green decor and this is EXACTLY how I’d love to decorate our bathroom at home! It’s complete with Ministry of Magic esque tiles. This is also the only bathroom on the property FYI – I promise you soon become a pro at going up and down narrow staircases.
Conclusion: A Magical Must Stay!
A night at 101 House at the End costs around £160-265 per night depending dates and length of stay. You can book your stay through Airbnb here – Stay at 101 House at the End.
And while there are local amenities nearby like a pub and corner shop – you’re also super close to the centre of York. It’s a 10 minute drive to the Shambles. But I’d also really recommend making a stop to get groceries before you arrive. I packed a cool bag full of our favourites so that we’d be prepared. But equally, we found everything extra that we needed nearby at the corner shop.
101 House at the End is not just a destination; it’s a magical experience leaving you feeling like you’ve spent time in the magical world of Harry Potter.
Would you spend a magical night here?
