One of my favourite places to visit in London, happens to be Selfridges. You. Must. Be. Shocked.
Ever since moving to Londontown, I’ve found myself obsessed. I visit for shopping (sometimes), like the time that I wore the wrong shoes into central London for a full day and ended up with bleeding feet… so I needed to buy my shiny space boots from Kurt Geiger. Mostly though, I end up there for food. The food hall where I buy random assortments like Goldfish crackers and expensive juices.
I’m not even sorry about it tbf.
But to be completely honest, my favourite thing to do at Selfridges is to visit their restaurants and bars. Whether it be the 2nd floor champagne bar, where I sat one day with my friend Grace for hours drinking a bottle of Moet, when in reality, we had planned to pop in for a ‘quick drink’ or the food hall downstairs.
Of course, The Forest on the Roof is a whole other category of excellence.
They redo the whole scene every winter and summer. The theme this winter happened to be pink, purple and filled with disco balls.
It was a little different to last year’s cosier tartan-esque theme. Think more Chamonix than this year’s Cher.
I really loved the fun pink neon theme. Just because you’re in Selfridges doesn’t mean that the Forest on the Roof is crazy fancy – or crazy expensive. It’s relatively affordable – the only real issue is that you have to book it majorly in advance for popular times. We popped in on a Sunday afternoon as they were winding down their service for the week, so it was easy to nab a table.
The thing is, I always love going here for drinks or a bite to eat, but as an FYI, I really wouldn’t recommend a Sunday afternoon. Every few minutes they kept coming over to tell us that a portion of the kitchen would be closing up and we’d have to order quickly if we wanted something.
It’s my only gripe. The rest of the Forest on the Roof experience was spot on, but it does sort of kill your vibe when you know everyone is pacing to GTFO.
ANYWAYS.
We decided that with all the kitchen fuss, that we’d go for super easy items to enjoy with our glasses of wine. I ordered the Picpoul de Pinet 2015 white, and Grace had the Chateau d’Astros Rose Cotes de Provence. How gorgeous do they look with that background? I’m a massive fan of getting a purple/pink glow to surround me at all times now.
I know I can always count on Grace to order Oysters with me.
On their menu we ordered a half dozen of the Dorset rock oysters with shallot vinegar. Of course, I always like to order a side of bread for the table and here we definitely weren’t disappointed. Their Farmhouse bread along with hand churned butter was delicious.
It wasn’t a relatively massive trip out with a full on meal – but at 4 in the afternoon, we didn’t have huge appetites, so we treated it as more of an opportunity to catch up over a bite and leisurely drink (we obviously ordered a second glass).
By 6pm we were out and on our ways home for the evening.
The Forest on the Roof is now officially closed for the winter time, so I’m looking forward to seeing what they bring as their theme this spring. I can guarantee I’ll be back in – just maybe not on a Sunday afternoon.
