Have you ever wondered where the Harry Potter locations from the movies were actually filmed? Same! I’ve always wanted to visit the spots where the cast and crew filmed and witness the iconic landscapes and scenery around the United Kingdom.
In particular, I’ve always wanted to visit the Harry Potter locations that were filmed in Scotland.
Scotland is one of my favourite places to visit. And even though we lived in Edinburgh once upon a time, we rarely explored further afield. Which now feels like an absolute crime to me, especially as such an avid Harry Potter fan.
There are so many amazing Harry Potter locations to visit in Scotland. And yes, they were right (near) my doorstop! So I’m making up for lost time and am on a mission to see all of the filming locations and places that look like they’ve inspired the series that I possibly can.
I love how magical each spot makes you feel!
5 magical Harry Potter locations to visit in Scotland ⤵️
🚂 1)The Hogwarts Express aka The Jacobite Steam Train
Truly, this Scottish Highlands adventure with The Jacobite steam train is as close to Hogwarts and the Hogwarts Express as you could possibly get in.
The train journey leaves from Fort William and travels two and a half hours across to Mallaig. You’ll even spot a few Harry Potter filming locations along the way. Standard seats are roughly £50 each and I’d recommend those for the experience as I don’t think you’ll get much more out of paying extra for the First Class seats.
For my full guide and real-life details on how to book The Jacobite steam train and experience, I’ve got you covered with everything you need to know in this blog post.
🛤 2) Glenfinnan Viaduct
It’s the world famous Glenfinnan Viaduct. The Hogwarts Express crosses this viaduct along its journey to Hogwarts as featured in the Harry Potter films. It’s rather magical watching the train go across this in real life. PS watch out for any flying cars! 🚙
🪦 3) Loch Eilt also known as Dumbledore’s final resting place
Loch Eilt is only a short 15 minute drive from Glenfinnan Viaduct. There is parking along the side of the road that leads straight to it and there is even a very small car park is nearby. It makes this particular pilgrimage super easy. From the car, it’s a one minute walk to the viewing point of Loch Eilt. You truly cannot miss it. Don’t forget to raise your wand in your respects to Dumbledore.
💀 4) Spot Tom Riddle’s grave at Greyfriars Kirkyard
It doesn’t feature in the films but this graveyard in Edinburgh, Scotland is in fact where some of the inspiration for the names of characters in the series came from. There is even a McGonagall grave there as well. A pretty cool piece of history!
🛍 5) Diagon Alley aka Victoria Street
Again, Edinburgh might not have any film locations but these spots are downright magical. Victoria Street in Edinburgh is iconic. The vibrant, sloped street even features several Harry Potter shops you can pop into. The entire city of Edinburgh is a magical wonderland too, so don’t miss the opportunity to explore plenty while you’re there.
Have you been to any of these magical Harry Potter locations?
