Aloha readers!
I have been looking forward to sharing this post with you lot for so long now.
Our night at the Luau.
The first four nights of our stay in Maui, we were located on the Lahaina area of the island, think the North West location.
And luckily for us, we were recommended to book into an evening at the Old Lahaina Luau.
Let me tell you right now, it did not disappoint.
So I decided to put on my most colorful outfit for the occasion…
Shop the Look
So we arrived at The Old Lahaina Luau! Ready to get our hula on, obviously.
We were greeted merrily with fresh Mai Tai’s!
Cheers!
The luau venue is stunning. You feel a little bit like you’re walking into a home and garden advertisement: Lush green, tropical decor, complete with tikis and torches. There are parts of it that are visually breathtaking.
They also have little activities on the grounds…
We dared ourselves to a round of this bowling game and I did strangely well and won on a first attempt. No photos of this were available as I was gloating to J.
Then we played amongst the tiki figures (okay, alright, maybe we I was a little bit tipsy at this point).
By then it was about time to eat…
We filled our plates with as much food as we possibly could.
The traditional luau feast consists of Kalua Pu’aua (roasted pork), Laulau (steamed pork), Mahi Mahi, steak, chicken, salmon, rices, fruit, vegetables… you name it, it’s at the luau.
And if you could name it, it could be found on our plates.
You have the option to sit on the ground right in front of the stage, or higher tabled seating set a bit further back. I’m glad I booked a low table for us, it provides such a unique experience.
So we sat on the ground and feasted, enjoying the pre luau dancing.
Our servers brought over dessert platters (not the nicest photo, but the dessert was lovely) while the show began… Lemon squares, macadamia cookies and a traditional Hawaiian dessert called Haupia.
Haupia is essentially a coconut gelatin square. You either love it or you hate it.
J hates it. I loved it. Couldn’t get enough of these. Luckily the rest of our table hated them too. More for me!
Honestly, if you ever have the chance to go to a luau in Hawaii. Go. The dancing is incredible and the stories that go with them are captivating.
Here’s a teeny bit of what it looks like. Obviously, I was not an acclaimed photographer that evening…
I wish I could move like these dancers. They seriously know how to shake it.
Although, they actually do have a part of the evening where they invite couples up to dance… obviously we were front and center enjoying every minute.
I highly recommend the Old Lahaina Luau if you ever find yourself in Maui. You won’t regret the experience. It’s wonderful to see such a great tradition kept alive through these ceremonies.
You know that the performers are proud of what they’re doing, their passion is evident in their faces and their movements, each dance tells a story of the Hawaiian history.
We had such a great time that night… and I’m so glad I could finally share it with you all!
Have you ever been to a luau? Would you go to one?
xx Kelly
