Have you ever wanted to spend the night on a train? Ever heard of the Caledonian Sleeper train?
I’ve always dreamed of climbing aboard the Hogwarts Express (and have done so now – kinda read about it here), so train travel is something that I continue to find ever so dreamy and am always seeking out.
The chance to take the overnight sleeper train from London to Scotland? It’s a bucket list kind of adventure!
Picture this: London Euston station bustling with life on a hot summer evening. And there I am, boarding the Caledonian Sleeper – all set for an overnight trip through Scotland to Fort William! Excitement? Check. Anticipation? Double-check. I’m diving headfirst into this train adventure feeling a little bit like I’m off to a version of the Hogwarts Express.
The Cabins
Let’s talk about the cabins – there’s something for everyone onboard. From standard seats, just like a long haul flight in economy to cozy little double bunks (I think this is the first time I ever slept in a bunk bed!!) and even plusher double rooms.
Don’t get me wrong – while this is a cosy adventure – it’s definitely unusual if you’re used to more space. The bathroom doubles as a shower which is a very interesting scenario! But it’s a once in a lifetime kind of travel experience, so we happily embraced our cosy quarters.
Dining in the train carriage
As we bid adieu to London, the Caledonian Sleeper begins its magical journey, chasing the sun as we climb upwards through the English countryside. We were smart or perhaps just especially keen to head towards to the dining carriage early in order to get a good seat. This carriage fills up quickly so you’ll want to ensure you throw your things in your room and then make you’re way here if you’re looking to spend a few hours eating, drinking and watching the countryside zoom past.
And the food is surprisingly super good! We tried the curry and the beef bourguignon – honestly we loved the food! Of course, a few glasses of wine to cheers with is equally a fun way to spend the evening!
A night’s sleep (or not so much!) on the train
As night falls, we’re snug in our cabin – me enjoying the bottom bunk for the night.
The gentle rocking of the train has the ability to lull you to sleep – but I won’t lie – it is a little tough to sleep on the overnight train. You will make your way through various loud station stops before making your way into the Highlands. My mind was equally buzzing with the promise of the Scottish Highlands on the horizon, so I found it quite hard to rest. I’d recommend bringing earplugs and a heavy duty eye mask to help you sleep.
Still, I think even with a bit of a tricky sleep – it’s an entirely worthwhile experience. Because waking up to that scenery? It’s like something out of a dream. Mist-kissed mountains, sleepy villages, and lochs sparkling in the morning light – Scotland knows how to show off – and we were here for every second of it.
A morning on the train
Waking up to that beautiful scenery feels like you’re the main character in a storybook. We rummaged through our things to get ready quickly – I even braved the shower/toilet – which was refreshing but alsoooo if you can I’d probably wait until you get to your next destination. It’s a tight fit!
After looking somewhat presentable, we made our way back to the dining carriage for breakfast. Scottish breakfasts could fuel a day’s adventure easily! And our morning dining companions were off to climb Ben Nevis – so for some – it’s much needed fuel.
And just when you think it can’t get any better, Fort William comes into view. Nestled by Ben Nevis, it’s the perfect ending to this epic journey. The charm of the town wraps around you, leaving you with memories that stick.

Would I go aboard The Caledonian Sleeper again?
Absolutely, I would! While the sleep was a little tricky – I think we’d be more like pros the second time around. It’s still such an incredibly cool experience. The Caledonian Sleeper? It’s not just a train ride. It’s a full-on experience, a chance to soak in Scotland’s vibes, history, and all that jaw-dropping beauty that you get to pass by.
For anyone itching for a memorable trip, the Caledonian Sleeper from London Euston to Fort William is a winner, blending cozy travels and Scotland’s gorgeous scenery.
You’re not just on a train; you’re living through a story – one that’ll have you planning your next Scottish adventure before this one’s even over!
