There are some places that we just keep coming back to.
Flat Iron is one of these superb spots. A restaurant that you can’t get enough of. No matter what the day, what the time, you think, ‘Yep, that’s what I could go for right now.’
The simplicity of it all draws you in. There’s one main item on the menu, and well, you’ve guessed it… steak. I never used to be the type of person who goes out for a steak dinner, but once you’ve been to Flat Iron, everything changes.
On a whim, we popped over one night for an early dinner. There are no reservations, so don’t expect to be seated immediately in peak times. No harm done though, they’ll send you downstairs for drinks or cocktails while you wait. What a shame.
We arrived at a magical time. Happy hour, a two for one special on drinks. Double the white wine for me and two ciders for Joe. (This happens between 5:30-6:30PM and again later around 9:30PM I believe).
Downstairs at the bar, it’s dimly lit. A quiet but simultaneously vivacious area. If you’re in absolute dire need of food, you can grab a fresh donut to tide you over.
We didn’t wait long before we were called up to settle in at our table.
The way Flat Iron works is that you share a table with other diners. You’ll find yourself at dinner with people during all stages of the meal. Just ordering drinks, having their steaks brought over or lingering over a bottle of wine. Try to remain calm while others are eating. Your time will come.
In the meantime, they bring over popcorn, my favorite snack!
The menu is limited, it’s good for the indecisive.
A mere £10 for steak that comes with a salad. Because it’s an inexpensive meal… well, I recommend you spring for a few sides to share. The chips (fries) are incredible. And the market greens of the day was steamed kale. Joe had never tried kale, so I thought it was about time.
It doesn’t take long for food to arrive.
And for the main event…
The table becomes quickly decorated with simply the best meal.
It’s phenomenal.
I cannot recommend Flat Iron enough. We went sometime in 2013 and consistently keep going back. The steak is cooked perfectly. And don’t worry, despite being a superb steak place, they don’t shame you for ordering it medium-well, which I really do appreciate.
Located in the heart of Soho, Flat Iron will continue to be one of my top London eats.
